“The structure of the Versailles floor is dominated by regular patterns, straight lines contrasting with diagonal lines. The juxtaposition of the two directions elaborates a harmonious and very distinctive pattern. The original dimensions of the antique Hungarian parquet squares are 97-103 cm per side. Planks of wood interlaced at 45° angles are bordered by a frame, and the whole composition outlines the structure of the individual quadrotto. The woods used for Versailles inlay are varied and all have very different characteristics. Both warm and cool tones go well with the interweaving of the patterns, and the combination of the different natural grains and shades of the woods–even of different woods–creates a surface rich in color and unexpected color combinations.
